Day 3 – April 2, 2025 – Fun on the Dart river

Today was an adventure, to say the least. Our travel agent had assured us this was an easy, lazy trip down the river. Well, it was down the river, that much was true, although again only half true!

Today we were picked up at the lodge and delivered to Dart River Adventures for an exciting day for sure. We were first suited up in wet suits and life jackets and boarded Jet Boats for a trip up river. Along the way, the driver would speed up and do a 360 which resulted in water pouring all over us in the boat! Not too bad but would certainly had been better if the day were sunny and hot, not overcast and 50 degrees.  All in good fun.

We reached a point up river where we were divided into groups and got into our rubber inflatable canoes.  At this point it is important to understand, the Dart is a wandering meandering alluvial plane with shallow channels that are never quite the same. So we had to pick our way through avoiding the rocks and the sholes. Sometimes getting stuck where we had to get out of the boat to pull it off the rocks. Not too bad, I just made believe I was Humphry Bogart and Cathy was Katherine Hepburn.

We followed the flow of the river downstream for a while and then beached our boats. While some lugged the boats inland towards a small grotto, others of us walked a path to a small crystal-clear pool of glacial feed water. Once the boats arrived, we boarded again to follow the flow upstream to a small waterfall.  This area was created by a earthquake thousands of years ago. The water is so clear and pure you can drink from the water, though it is cold, and some decided to go for a swim, not us.

We had lunch and then boarded the boats again to continue downstream to a landing where we boarded a bus to take us back to the main office where we turned in our wet suits.

In all a great adventure.

Returning to the lodge we rested, then dinner and a well-deserved sleep!
