Day 21 – April 20, 2025 – Wharekauhau Country Estate – Chief in the wild!

Happy Easter!

Today was a leisurely day. We got up late and had breakfast of juice and coffee and a small sweet roll. We did not want too much, not that we ever have a big breakfast, because we would be having lunch in the wild.

To pass the morning, we took a walk heading toward the mountain pass, though we did not anticipate trekking up the mountain. We met one of the staff also out for a walk with her dogs. While the weather was still sunny but breezy, she looked at the sky and said the clouds looked like they were coming down and we should expect rain. When we reached a fork in the road, she went left and we went to the right to continue our walk, and sure enough it did start to drizzle. It was not too much to make us turn back. Shortly after, the rain stopped, and we caught sight of a rainbow. We continued with the initial intent to cut across the paddock and make our way past the air strip and back to the main gate. But by then it was just about 11 and we knew we needed to be back by 12 to meet our chief in the wild for lunch. So, we just turned around and headed back.

After freshening up, we headed over to reception to meet a driver who took us out to the overlook we had been to on our tour of the farm the other day. The weather cooperated and it was a perfect spot for lunch.

We had to give advance indication of our choice for lunch. There was either a land menu or a sea menu. We had chosen the sea menu as Cathy prefers it and we don’t do much fish at home, though we have done a lot since landing in New Zealand.

This was a fantastic location for an alfresco lunch.

We started with a dish of a local Abalone. Then there was a plate of potato salad and a broccoli salad and local spinach. This was served with a Butterfish prepared in parchment paper. The Butterfish, we were told, is the only vegetarian fish in the sea. Anyway, all the food was fantastic, and the location was fabulous.

We decided to walk back to the lodge to walk off the fabulous meal. The rest of the day was spent resting and packing. We leave tomorrow for our next location Cape Kidnappers.

We headed over for cocktails at 6:30. Dinner was in the library.  After a fabulous lunch and so many fabulous dinners, sometimes you just want a hamburger!
