Day 60 – 62 May 29 – 31, 2025 – Brisbane

MAy 29, 2025 - Brisbane

We walked the half mile to breakfast and then back to our house to pack and get ready for the drive to Brisbane. Not every day you walk a mile before 10am!  The drive back to Brisbane was uneventful. We got to our hotel, the Emporium, just after noon.  Our room was not ready, so we walked around the area. There was a park just down the street, so we strolled along under the flowered paths and watched some kids in the water. There is a man-made beach in the park, but it was closed for repairs. We learned that this area was reclaimed and built up for a world exhibition in 1988.

May 30, 2025 - Brisbane

It started out as a cool and overcast day. We met Rashid in the lobby of the hotel. We started the day with a walk along the river in the park we walked yesterday.

We learned that Brisbane is a bit older than Melbourne, but because it lacked the money that Melbourne had due to the Gold Rush, there were few of the Victorian buildings and it appears to be a more modern city.

We arrived at the South Bank landing for the City Cat, a water taxi that runs the length of the river stopping at various points. It is only 50 cents to ride for as long as you want. We got out and caught a City Cat going back from where we came. We continued our walk along the river and then to a gallery of aboriginal art. We then headed back to the hotel to pick up the car and head out to Mt. Coot-tha. We walked through the Botanical Gardens here stopping at the Bonsai house. Then went to the lookout, a high peak overlooking the city. But the clouds had come in and there was no view.

Today we were met by Brad with the plan to drive to the rain forest, a world heritage listed site and the Springbrook national park. The weather was not cooperative, but we still managed to get in some walks and sites.

Our first stop was the Natural Bridge, a cave with a waterfall that comes into it. There were mini bats that fly around inside the cave. You can’t really see them, except you can sort of spot the movement.

Next, we headed to a lookout for a view of the valley. On the way Brad pointed out a couple of trees that are reported to be over 2,000 years old. The lookout was a disappointment as the clouds prevented any view.

We then stopped for lunch at the Dancing Waters café. After which we walked to the Purling Brook Falls. On the way, there was a monument listing Aboriginal words with English translations. The falls were impressive. We continued on across the top of the falls to the other side for a different view.

We next stopped at the Canyon Lookout, but again, not much to see.

We decided to head back towards the city with a side trip along the Gold Coast. This is a beach area flanked by high rise hotels and apartments, much like Miami. Then it was back to the hotel for dinner and packing.
