February 27, 2024 Cuerville Island and Niko Harbor

We woke to an overcast day with low clouds that touched the tops of the mountains surrounding the bay we were in. After breakfast we boarded a zodiac for a cruise through ice fields around Cuerville Island. Here are several glaciers that calve and produce many icebergs.

The cruise around Cuerville Island.

We then landed on the island to view two penguin colonies. Wonderful pictures of these smelly but cute birds. Enjoy the pictures and be glad I do not have a smellaphoto lens.

After lunch was another zodiac cruise in the area of Niko Harbor. We could not land because of all the ice in the area and the crew was concerned about the possibility of calving glaciers. The clouds continued to be low with sun above creating an otherworldly atmosphere as we cruised along. On our ride we saw penguins “swimming” a Weddell Seal lounging on an iceberg and two whales sleeping.

After we were all back on the ship, we did the Polar Plunge.  They hook a harness on you and then you jump into the ocean where the water temperature is 0.7 centigrade! It was COLD.

Jumping in!

Climbing out!
