March 4 2024 – New Island in the Falkland Islands

March 3rd was a day at sea heading to the Falkland Islands. Our first stop at New Island was a wet landing in the zodiacs for some bird watching. There were many various bird species, don’t ask me to identify them, but we did see two rockhopper penguins high on the cliffs. See if you can spot them in the pics. Don’t know how they got there or how they would get down.

In the afternoon we took the zodiacs to West Point on the northern shore. We trekked a ways to see some nesting Magellanic penguins. Along the way we spotted a lone Gentoo penguin far from his/her home.

Then back toward the dock and we started a long, long, long, climb and walked to the other side of the island to view a nesting site of some albatrosses.

On the way back, just above the harbor, we had tea and cakes in a little house.

According to Cathy’s phone we walked over 7 miles today. Something for a sea voyage! Too tired to go to dinner, so dinner in the suite!

Tomorrow, Stanley.
