Day 6 – August 17th – Stirling Castle and getting stuck

Having forgotten to set an alarm, we were a wee bit rushed to finish packing and checking out. But we were only a few minutes behind and Allan was waiting and we started off toward Inverness.

Our first stop was Stirling Castle. This was the seat of the Scottish kings. Like most castle / forts it is a hodge podge of architecture and fortifications that were built over centuries and multiple monarchs from David to James VI / I. It overlooks the valley where William Wallace defeated the English before being turned over to them to be executed. We can also see the area of the battlefield where Robert the Bruce defeated the English to claim the throne.

We left the castle with a plan to tour the Dalwhinnie distillery. However, the A9 was closed so we detoured to various back roads. These country roads are barely wide enough for one and a half cars so we were stopped at various times to let others pass.  This took some time, so we missed the tour and continued on to our hotel in Inverness. Ness Walk, a beautiful and luxurious hotel
