Woke up nursing a bad cold. But with meds hoped to manage it. With rain in the forecast for later in the afternoon, we set our sights for the first stop at the “Old Man of Storr”. This is a cluster of ancient landslip pinnacles. To reach it there is a 2-mile moderately step path. There are two ways up, one is a steep shorter path the other is less steep but longer. We chose the latter of the two. We reached the plateau where the two paths meet but were unable to go further. Disappointed, but it gives us a reason to return. But next time with Granddaughter Orla who knows the way.
Our next stop was the Museum of Island Life. This is an open-air museum that preserves an old Highland township of traditional stone blackhouses with thatched roofs. It offers an authentic look into the challenging daily conditions of 19th century crofters. The last people to use these buildings left in 1957, The bedroom was shared by their 10 children!
Next we went up through the Quiraing Mountain Pass to a lookout view point for some amazing views.
Heading back down we stopped at Kilt Rock and Lealt Falls viewpoint. Here there was also a monument to the Crofters who suffered because of various land reforms.
