March 14, 2024 – Inaccessible Island

This morning, we were still in transit between Gough and Inaccessible Island. We are anticipated to be there for a zodiac cruise this afternoon. After breakfast we had biosecurity check. That is where we need to make sure anything that will be going assure on Tristen is clean of any foreign matter. The daily briefing will be early because it is anticipated that the zodiac cruise around Inaccessible will end late.

Inaccessible Island is a volcanic island located in the South Atlantic Ocean, 31 km (19 mi) south-west of Tristan da Cunha. Its highest point, Swale’s Fell, reaches 581 m (1,906 ft), and the island is 12.65 km2 (4.88 sq mi) in area. The volcano was last active six million years ago and is currently extinct.

Inaccessible Island is part of the archipelago of Tristan da Cunha, which is part of the overseas territory of the United Kingdom known as Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. The harbor on Inaccessible Island allows access for only a few days of the year. Access to the island must be granted by the local government office.

Unfortunately, the seas and wind did not cooperate today. Waves of over 6 feet made loading the zodiacs too hazardous, so instead, the captain agreed to do a circumnavigation of the island, first one way and then the other. A beautiful if windy day, on deck, watching the various sea birds.

Captain says, if weather holds, we may be able to return to Inaccessible in a couple of days. Right now, the plan is to head to Tristan Da Cunha and then Nightingale Island and then, maybe back to Inaccessible.

In all it’s been a great day!
