Day 10 – April 9, 2025 – Walking trails at Arthur’s Pass

Today was an active day. We started out at 9:00AM heading toward Arthur’s Pass National Park. It was about a 2-hour drive. Along the way we stopped first at a site that is meaningful to the Mauri as a spiritual site. This area was underwater several million years ago. Uplifted by the tectonic actively. The various rock formations can be interpreted in many ways depending on your imagination.  They call this the New Zealand Stone Henge and on solstice days many would come to celebrate the changing of the seasons.

At this point I should mention the roads. It is interesting that most of the roads we have traveled are only two lanes. There are occasional sections on the left for slower cars so others can pass. But four lane roads are only near the city of Christchurch. At least that is what we see on the South Island. Also interesting, when you come to a bridge, most are only one lane, so you have to make sure there is no one coming the other way before starting to cross.

We continued on into the mountains. The day was cool, but still the sky was clear, and the sun kept us from being too cold.  We did several walks at different places in the park. All not too strenuous, but exceedingly beautiful scenery of mountains, forests and waterfalls.

We returned to the lodge, late in the afternoon. Rested, showered, and ready for another fabulous dinner.
