From what we saw in our day and a half in Lima, there are two parts of the city that were of interest to us. The historic center and the more modern and residential area of Miraflores, where our hotel was for our last night in Peru. In the historic center is the Plaza San Martin, that gives homage to Peru’s liberator, Jose de San Martin. The plaza is dominated by the statue in the center.
Not far from here is the Plaza Mayor or Plaza de Armas of Lima, the birth place of the City. This huge plaza is surrounded by the Cathedral of Lima, the Presidential Palace and other municipal buildings.
Just off the center is an historic street that currently houses many shops. Here you can taste Pisco Sours the national drink of Peru.
The patron saint of Lima is Saint Rose of Lima, the first Catholic Saint of the Americas. The church dedicated to her is a Dominican monastery with many architectural and historic aspects. Beautifully maintained, there are many statues that they bring out on holy days.
In the Miraflores area is a beautiful park, Parque del Amor, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Just off the Plaza Mayor, is a 16th century home, Casa Aliaga. This home has been in the same family for 17 generations. Here we had a wonderful lunch and a presentation of musical instruments of the indigenous peoples.
Our final stop in Lima was the Museo Larco. This is a private collection of over 65,000 artifacts. They tell the story of over 2000 years of people, how they lived, worshiped and worked. A fabulous museum that was laid out beautifully. Unfortunately, my pictures did not turn out so well because of the muted lighting that was for the protection of the artifacts. But I did my best.
From Lima we are on to Santiago Chile for some wine and culture. I expect to post about that tomorrow.
Your pictures are spectacular. I feel like I’m looking at them through your camera!
