Today we made our way to Glasgow. On the way we stopped at Inverary Castle, a country “house” near Inveraray in the county of Argyll. It has been the seat of the Dukes of Argyll, chiefs of Clan Campbell, since the 18th century. The current Duke, the 13th Duke of Argyll, and his family live in private apartments in the castle. We had a private tour with Kenny, who was very enthusiastic, explaining the history of the building and its occupants, former and current. There was a lot on the “Double Duchess”, Elizabeth Gunning who married the Duke of Hamilton but was soon widowed and then married John Cambell who became the 5th Duke of Argyll in 1770, and Elizabeth became a duchess for the second time hence her sobriquet the “Double Duchess”.
Kenney also noted the many media productions that used the castle. Also of special note was the piano in one of the rooms. Lerner and Low composed My Fair Lady on this piano while visiting.
From there we drove through the small town of Luss on the shores of Loch Lomond. This is a conservation village meaning that the buildings may not be altered.
We continued on our way to Glasgow. Allen drove around for a bit explaining some areas of the city and then dropped us off at our Hotel, Hotel du Vin in Glasgow’s West End. The hotel, situated within 5 Victorian houses that have been connected to provide access to 49 suites, a restaurant and a bar.
