After two days sailing, we arrive at Ducie Atoll just around 1:00 pm local time, which is 4 hours behind Eastern DST. The Ducie Atoll is one of four islands that make up the Pitcairn island group. It is uninhabited and consists of a fringing reef washed by the swell of the ocean. The plan was to take zodiac boats to land on the island, however, because the sea was too rough, we could not make a landing. Instead we had an hour ride in the zodiacs to about 100 yards off the shore to view the sea birds and the shore line. There is also a memorial to the Acadia, a ship that ran aground here in 1881.
Tomorrow we will be at Henderson Island, another of the Pitcairn group. Henderson is also uninhabited with an abundance of wildlife. Hopefully the weather will be better and we can land.
I am in awe of all that you are seeing and learning! How incredible and wonderful. Please continue your amazing log–I am enjoying every minute and every word of it!
